In
1776, the same year we - the American Colonies - published
the Declaration of Independence, Adam Smith publshed the
book An Inquiry Into the Wealth of Nations.
What
people "in the know" often fail to see is that the two
documents apply the very same ideas in two different spheres
of human action. The Declaration shows how those ideas
establish freedom by limiting the scope and purpose of
government. The Wealth of Nations shows how people who are
free to act in their own self interest, voluntarily
exchanging their time, talents, and the fruit of their labor
with one another, produce the greatest amount of wealth for
all, as if guided by an "invisible hand."
As
we study the Declaration, we'll learn what the ideas are
that create freedom and prosperity. In our text on the
economic system, we'll see how those ideas allow people to
create new wealth.

Adam Smith's ideas about the "free market" are
so important to society that some people like to
publicly demonstrate their support and
understanding of those ideas by wearing an Adam
Smith tie! You can purchase them from the Leadership
Institute.
