Jihad is not a renegade idea dreamed up by militants who do not follow the true teachings of Islam. Jihad is explicitly commanded by Koran, the Holy Book of Islam, and is the idea that has driven 15 centuries of Islamic conquest and imperialism. Koran says the goal of Jihad is to wipe out other religions and teaches Muslims to kill non-Muslims, enslave them, confiscate their property, and force them to pay tribute (called Jizya) to accomplish this goal. Muhammad taught that even he did not know what Allah would do with him because dying in Jihad is the only way to be sure of going to Heaven in Islam. The real threat of Jihad to the United States is that here, Muslims can gain power peacefully, through the political process. An America ruled by Islam would be a very different place. Our rights are fragile, and preserving them requires that most citizens understand the ideas on which our limited government and free society are based. But few do. Because Muslims act on their understanding of God and what He requires, the only way to stop Jihad is to persuade Muslims that much of what Koran teaches is not true, and help them to accept the ideas, all based on "love your neighbor as yourself," that produce freedom, prosperity, and peace.
